When we offer our best wishes to others, we say: “May you be happy every day”. But there are always things that prevent people from feeling happy.

Besides,   2  life events as well as social and economic factors can also   3  in the way of happiness. Third, there’s   4  affecting your happiness, for diseases, if any, bring you trouble and pain.

Is it possible that people can find   5  happiness with so many factors preventing them? Positive psychologists believe it’s   6  for people to stay happy for long periods, although it cannot be lasting. Psychologists argue that day-to-day happiness   7  on pleasures and gratifications (满足).

Pleasures are rich   8  that simply make us feel good —— things like eating cake or drinking wine. Gratifications are activities that we like to do and we give all we have to them. They’re often   9  , and we have to draw on personal skills and strengths to perform them. For some people, gratifications come with work. Doctors, for example, often become so   10  in an operation that hours pass without   11  the time. For others, it may be   12  like gardening or stamp collecting.

Too often, people choose pleasure over gratification because it’s easier and people can   13  feel the effects. Always choosing pleasures over gratifications, however, prevents people from developing their personal   14  , which, if they’re not put to work, die. Pleasures shouldn’t be given up completely, however. They should be chosen   15  , for not selecting pleasures in a sensible way in turn causes other troubles.

IF and WHEN were friends. Every week they met and their conversation usually centered on all the things they were going to achieve. This particular Saturday when they met, WHEN sensed that IF was not in a great mind. WHEN questioned IF, “What is wrong with you? You don’t seem your usual cheery self?” IF looked at WHEN and replied, “I just don’t feel I am making any progress. Last week I saw a course and wanted to take if only I had the time to take it.” WHEN knew exactly how IF felt. “I too saw a course and I’m going to register when I get enough money.” said WHEN, “What about that new job you were going to apply for? You were so excited about it last week.” IF responded, “If my computer didn’t break down last week, I would have applied. So I could not type my resume.”

“Don’t worry about it, when you are ready, another job will come through. I have been thinking about looking for another job, too, but I will wait and when the weather gets nicer I will look then.” WHEN then went on to tell IF about his week, hoping that it would cheer him up a bit.

The man at the next table couldn’t help but overhear WHEN and IF. “Excuse me gentlemen,” the man said. Surprised, IF and WHEN both looked at the man. The man continued, “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help hearing your conversation. I think I know how you could solve your problems.” Curious, IF asked the gentleman, “How do you think you can solve our problems?” The gentleman smiled and said, “You only need to listen to yourselves. It remains me of an old proverb: ‘ If and When were planted, and Nothing grew’.” The gentleman went on, “Just start doing, take action, and stop talking about ‘if’ and ‘when’.” IF and WHEN suddenly realized that what the gentleman had said was so true. Both of them were guilty of thinking and living their life for the “ifs” and “whens”. The gentleman left and IF and WHEN’s conversation changed. My name is Jason. Like most authors, I am one of those who do not believe in love at first sight until I experience it myself. It all started like this. I was with a few friends at McDonalds when a group of girls came and took their seats. There was this girl, quite outstanding for the smile she was wearing. While they were at the counter ordering their food, I noticed they all had a disability, and they could not talk. But, this was not considered a disability to me, so I walked up to ask for her number. She was surprised. But she eventually gave me her address and her name is Elaine. She did not have a phone at home and there was no need for her.

After a few days, I sent her a letter, asking her out on a date the following Saturday. We were supposed to meet at the cinema. She appeared, wearing that same smile that caught me. In order to communicate, I needed to get a pen and paper. I asked her about how she felt about me. She told me she was very happy, but at the same time, she was worried as she could not define whether my love was out of sympathy or was it from my heart. From that moment, I have been asking myself the question, until a month later I finally made up my mind. I was really in love with her, not for her disability that I sympathize, not for that she is pretty, but for the fact that I love her…

I went to her home. I pulled her out of her home and ran to the park in front of her block of flats. I told her how I felt. She took the pen and wrote this sentence, “I love you too, but now that I am assured that you love me for what I am and not out of sympathy, I feel that I will not regret the decision.” Now, we have been together for two years and although we have not planned to get married, I have never once quarrel with her, and I never will.

Love is magical, which helps us erase the prejudice against disability and discover a person’s inner beauty.

(   )31. There was no need for Elaine to have a phone because __.

A. she had a hard time and had to save money

        B. she did not have many friends to talk to

        D. she was dumb and had to communicate through papers

(   )32. Elaine was worried because__.

A. she was in love with a stranger she never met

        B. she didn’t know whether to go out with Jason

        C. she wondered whether Jason loved her out of sympathy

        D. she communicated with friends with difficulty

(   )33. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Jason fell in love with Elaine at first sight.

        B. Jason was good at making friends with others.

        C. Jason invited Elaine out to see a film.

        D. Jason was impressed by Elaine’s smile.

(   )34. “The decision” in the third paragraph refers to __.

A. getting married to Jason

        B. being Jason’s girlfriend

        C. turning down Jason’s sympathy

        D. Having appointments with Jason

(   )35. The writer writes the passage in order to __.

A. tell and share his romantic love story

        B. inform people of the power of love

        C. persuade people to believe in love at first sight

        D. ask people not to look down on people with a disability

C

We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you''ve read in the papers. Some fears are reasonable, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o''clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won''t need to live in fear of it. Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes and relationships. If left unchecked, it can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies hidden inside us.

Let me tell you about four other enemies we face from within.

The first enemy we face is hesitation, which is the thief of opportunity. It will steal your chances for a better future. The second enemy inside is doubt. Sure, there''s room for healthy skepticism. You can''t believe everything. But you also can''t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, the future and even the opportunities. Worse of all, they doubt themselves. Doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart.

The third enemy within is worry. Just don''t let it conquer you. Instead, let it alarm you. Worry can be useful. But you can''t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here''s what you''ve got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner. Whatever is pushing on you, you''ve got to push back.

The fourth interior enemy is overcaution. It is the timid approach to life. Timidity is not a virtue; it''s an illness. Timid people don''t get promoted. They don''t advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace.

Do battle with the enemy. Do battle with your fears. Build your courage to fight what''s holding you back, and what''s keeping you from your goals and dreams. Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become!

(   )36. Some people are fearful because __.

A. they are not born with courage

        B. their friends sometimes scare them

        C. they are affected by their experiences

        D. they are cheated by the newspapers

(   )37. The underlined word “skepticism” (Para. 3 ) probably means __.

A. disbelief    B. hesitation      C. discouragement    D.  self-determination

(   )38. It can be inferred from the text that __.

A. it’s not wise to walk alone in a bad part of town

        B. it’s impossible for timid people to get a promotion

        C. over caution causes more serious results than worry

        D. fears have a negative effect on people’s life

(   )39. Which of the following is NOT a sensible way to battle with worry?

A. Drive worry into a small corer in your heart.

        B. Fight something that is holding you back.

        C. Ignore the problem for a while.

        D. Conquer worry instead of being conquered.

(   )40. The passage is mainly about __.

A. problems and results caused by fear

        B. enemies we are facing from within

        C. how to be courageous and fearless

        D. ways to achieve goals and realize dreams

D

Common sense might tell us that when a volcano starts erupting, the best thing to do is run away. But for a small group of photographers, news of a new erupting volcano somewhere in the world means one thing: It’s time to get on a plane.

In early April, Martin Rietze spent three sleepless nights next to a large rock about 500 meters from the mouth of Iceland’s recently reawakened Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Why sleepless? Because when a vocano is throwing car-sized pieces of rock into the air, you can’t close your eyes for a second. “It’s too dangerous to sleep, so you have to stay up,” he says.

There are volcano photographers all over the world, although only perhaps a couple hundred of them. The Internet has allowed them to share their work and tips. “It’s a labor of love, because they all know they can’t make a living at it”, says Richard Roscoe, a patent examiner from Britain. “Seeing an eruption in progress is frightening,” says Jim Stimac, an engineer from Indonesia. He says he tries to be as cautious as possible.

But even the most experienced can lose their lives. Volcanologists Katia Drafft and her husband Maurice Drafft form France, and Harry Glicken from the US died in an eruption on Mount Unzen in Japan on June 3, 1991, along with 41 journalists.

Professional volcanologists “think we’re mad.” Roscoe says. Though not all in the academic field look down on them, Richard Wunderman, who edits the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network, says he often relies on amateurs for reports and photos of eruptions that would otherwise go unrecorded. “They’re an amazing resource,” he says, “The hardest part about capturing the power of a volcano in a photo isn’t getting close enough, but getting a clear view”, says Arnold Binas, a computer scientist in Sydney. “Clouds, fog and steam often block the view”, he says. “Patience is the key.”

A chemical engineer wears a climbing helmet, a gas mask and gloves. “They’re very important because fresh lava can be very sharp, so if you put your hand down, you can get hurt badly,” he says.

(   )41. At the news of a new erupting volcano, some photographers will probably ____.

A. stay sleepless to protect themselves

        B. go to the spot and take photos

        C. get online to search more information

        D. become crazy and ignore their common sense

(   )42. It can be inferred from the text that ____.

A. volcano photographers share their experience through Internet

        B. it is common for people to run away when a volcano erupts

        C. Katia Drafft and her husband are experienced volcanologists

        D. some photographers complain that they cannot earn money from their hobby

(   )43. Arnold Binas believes that capturing the power of a volcano mainly lies in __.

A. love        B. distance        C. experience        D. patience

(   )44. Who approves of the work of amateur photographers?

A. Richard Wunderman        B. Patrick Koster

C. Jim Stimac                D. Martin Rietze

(   )45. The attitude of the writer is __.

A. approval        B. neutral        C. disapproval        D. praise

A. Dear editor,

I’m very upset at the moment, because I didn’t pass the recent exam. I did everything I could to improve my grades, but I still failed. Sometimes I even want to leave school to find a job. What should I do? I really need your help.

B. Dear editor,

I am fond of playing the piano. But the college entrance examination is approaching, and I must get well prepared for it. So I have only 15 minutes to play the piano every day. I do not want to give up my favorite, but my parents and teachers are strongly against me to continue playing it. They think it is a waste of time. what should I do?

C. Dear editor,

I’m an out-going girl, but I lose my temper for no reason at times. This really influences my studies and my ability to get along with others. I know it’s bad, but I just can’t control myself. How can I avoid this?

D. Dear editor,

The national college entrance examination is approaching. I’m feeling more and more pressure. I know I must focus all my attention on my studies, but I just can’t. There are so many temptations----fascinating novels, interesting movies and so on. What can I do?

E. Dear editor,

I’m a Senior 3 student. I am always troubled by my feelings. Sometimes I really want to study hard, but after a few days, I begin to lose heart. I fail to keep myself motivated. I even wander in class. What should I do?

F. Dear editor,

I’m going to take the national college entrance examination next month. I am becoming more and more nervous about it. I’m a country boy. I must go to university and, after graduation, find a fob to support my family. I want my parents to have a rich life in the future. So I’m feeling huge pressure. What can I do?

阅读以下报社编辑的回信,匹配来信与回信:

(   )46. Dear Xiaoming,

I am very sorry to hear about your disappointment but I am happy to hear how hard you’re working. So, even if you don’t pass the exam, you are still learning valuable lessons that will prepare you for getting a good job. Good luck!       Editor

(   ) 47. Dear Xiao Fei,

Part of growing up is learning to identify our weaknesses. So it is good that you see that you are bad-tempered. This is a problem you do have to solve because people don’t like being around an ill-tempered person. The next time you find yourself getting angry, count to 10 in your head before you say anything. This will allow you time to think before you act, and it will prevent you from saying hurtful things.       Editor

(   ) 48. Dear Daniel,

Everybody feels pressure, especially around exam time. The trick is to find a balance, and a stable routine. Never spend more than a couple of hours studying without a break. There are always other options. Never believe that one event is the end of the world or it will continue to scare you. Don’t panic about a future that hasn’t happened yet. Your parents will still be proud of no matter what the result will be. Just try your best.      Editor

(   ) 49. Dear Liang Zhaohe,

Try and remember that the college entrance exam will one day be over. When it is, you’ll have plenty of time to return to playing the piano. So for now you should focus on the exam and use those 15 minutes as a break where you can relax and enjoy yourself. Of course, you should never give up what you love, but for now, think of it as simply putting playing the piano on hold.

Editor

(   ) 50. Dear Amy,

If you know you should focus your attention on studying, then go ahead and try your best to do so. You need to be disciplined. It’s also a good idea to reward yourself for getting work done. For example, do 45 minutes of work and then take half an hour off to read or watch TV. Also, try to do your work at the beginning of the day, so that once it’s done you can take the rest of the day off.          Editor

Some men who were sent to look at the passes over the mountains shook their heads. Then one of them said, “It may be possible, but…” “Let me hear no more,” said Napoleon. “Forward to Italy!”

People laughed at the thought of an army of sixty thousand crossing the Alps because there was no road at all there. But Napoleon, with great determination, gave the order to march. 第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

本文讲述了阻碍人们获得快乐的原因以及如何保持快乐的心态。

( C )1. 根据前文中的“genetics”(遗传学),可知选naturally(天然地、天生地)

( B )2. 指“重大的(major)”生活事件以及社会、经济因素可阻人们获得快乐。

( A )3. 表示“碍事”是stand in the way,与第一段“prevent sb. from doing”相呼应。

( D )4. 根据下文diseases可推断,这里应该选择health(健康)。

( B )5. 表示“持久的,恒久的lasting”,与该段第2句“although it cannot be lasting”相对应。

( C )6. 与该段第1句possible对应,回应第1句的问题。句意是:心理学家认为,尽管人们不可能拥有永恒的幸福感,但要体会到长时间的快乐是有可能的。

( A )7. 根据第三段可知,pleasures和gratifications是可以让人们感到幸福快乐的两大因素,因此选A。rely on取决于;result in导致;contribute to促进,有助于;make up构成。

( B )8. 这里experiences在此表示“体验,经历”,与eating cake or drinking wine对应。

( D )9. 因为下文提及到we have to draw on personal skills and strengths我们要用到个人技能和优势,因此选challenging有挑战性的。

( A )10. 表示医生专注于be absorbed in手术,与前句Gratifications come from work对应。

( B )11. 因医生全神贯注于手术,所以without noticing the time没有注意到时间悄悄流逝。

( C )12. 因hobby与下文“gardening or stamp collection”相匹配。

( B )15. 下文提及not selecting pleasures in a sensible way in turn causes other troubles,因此人们需要carefully慎重地,小心地选择获得快乐感的途径。

Possible Versin:

Napoleon successfully led his soldiers across the Alps. where there were no roads at all. He succeeded because he had a strong belief in success and immediately took action.

Belief plays an important role in one’s success. With belief in mind, one will stick to his goal, overcome the difficulty and eventually achieve his ambition.

Once, I was chosen to enter for an English speech contest on behalf of my class. As a strong-minded boy, I aimed at the champion ship and thus made good preparations for the competition ship. I woke up early to practice my oral English and tried to read as much English and tried to read as much English as possible to enrich my knowledge. To my delight, I won the championship. It was my strong belief in victory that propelled me to realize my goal.

Belief makes a great difference in our life. As long as we have confidence and are willing to take action, we’re bound to succeed sooner or cater.
